From the electrician: do you need the bigger service?
Online forums often leave people thinking any new EV charger or appliance means a bigger service. Sometimes it does. Often, when I run a proper load calculation, the service you already have turns out to be enough, and I have watched people spend a lot on an upgrade that smarter load management could probably have avoided.
For my own house, I would install a full-size service with spare spaces for circuits I may add later, even when the current load does not need it. The extra cost during the install is usually small next to opening everything up again a few years on, when the next large appliance or addition shows up.

Questions to ask before you sign
Matt's list for this job.
- What service size are you proposing, and what loads did you use to choose it?Service capacity comes from the loads the house will carry, not a count of empty breaker spaces.
- Does this include the meter equipment, service wiring, grounding and bonding, and surge protection where your code requires it?The box on the wall may be new while the meter and wiring feeding it remain untouched.
- How will you coordinate disconnecting and reconnecting with the utility, and how long will the power be off?Disconnecting the service takes coordination. A missed utility appointment can leave the house dark longer than planned.
- What happens if you find damaged wiring or existing circuits that need changes to pass inspection?A panel swap can expose damaged wiring. Set the terms for approving repairs before the cover comes off.
- Will you trace the circuits and leave an accurate panel directory? When something trips, a directory that just says outlets leaves you guessing.
- What does your price cover for permitting, inspections, wall repairs, and hauling away the old equipment?Electrical completion can still leave drywall repair, debris, and inspection fees on your plate.
- What future equipment have you allowed for, and what would still require more work?A planned charger or workshop belongs in the sizing conversation now, while you can still shape the job.

Questions people ask
What do permits show for a 200 amp panel upgrade?
On permits that upgrade a service to 200 amps, the median declared value runs from $2,510 in Baltimore to $6,930 in Seattle. The meter, service wiring, grounding, utility work and access around the panel can all move a quote. Enter your ZIP in the checker for the middle half of permit values near you.
How do you know these permits are for 200 amps?
We read the new service size from the permit description, such as an upgrade from one size to 200 amps, a service upgraded to 200 amps, or a 200 amp service upgrade. Permits that do not name the new size stay in the general panel upgrade range instead. We checked a sample of permits from each region by hand before publishing.
Is a 200 amp upgrade different from a general panel upgrade?
This page covers only upgrades that end at 200 amps. The panel upgrade calculator covers every upgrade to more amps, including smaller and larger services. If your quote names 200 amps, this range is the closer match. If it names another size, use the panel upgrade calculator. Both ranges come from the same permits, cleaned the same way.
What should a 200 amp upgrade quote include?
The new service size in writing, the meter and service entrance work, grounding and bonding, the main panel and breakers, labeling, the permit and inspection, utility coordination, and wall repair. Ask how long the power will be off. The questions list on this page covers what to get in writing before you sign.
